Dubai has one of the best road networks in the world — but a few local rules genuinely matter when you’re behind the wheel of a rental. Here’s everything you need to drive confidently and avoid surprise charges, from Salik tolls to parking and speed enforcement.
Salik TollsSalik Tolls
Dubai’s automatic toll charges AED 4 (AED 6 at peak) each time you pass an overhead gate — no booths, no stopping. Every rental has a Salik tag fitted; we pass crossings to you at cost. Plan routes to skip gates where you can.
ParkingParking & Zones
Central Dubai uses colour-coded RTA paid zones — pay via the RTA Smart Parking or DubaiNow app with the zone number and your plate. Malls offer free hours, many residential areas are free, and Fridays and holidays are often free.
Speed LimitsFollow Speed Limits
Limits are signposted and enforced by fixed and mobile radars: roughly 60–80 km/h in the city, 80–100 on urban highways, up to 100–120 on open roads like Sheikh Zayed Road. Always follow the posted sign — fines rise sharply the faster you go.
Safe DistanceMaintain a Safe Distance
Tailgating is dangerous and finable in Dubai. Keep a clear gap from the car ahead — following too closely is actively penalised and a top cause of highway accidents. Leave extra room in winter rain or fog.
Lane DisciplineLane Discipline
Keep right unless overtaking. The far-left lane on highways is for passing only — cruising there can earn a fine and hold up traffic. Stay in your lane and let faster vehicles through on the left.
Changing LanesChange Lanes Safely
Signal early, check mirrors and your blind spot, then move decisively once clear. Sudden, unsignalled lane changes are a frequent cause of both accidents and fines — smooth and predictable is the rule.
Road SignsUnderstanding Road Signs
Signs follow international standards in Arabic and English, colour-coded by route: green for highways, blue for urban roads, brown for tourist and heritage sites. Warnings and lane guidance appear well ahead, giving you time to react.
Zero ToleranceDrinking & Driving
The UAE has zero tolerance — there is no acceptable alcohol level behind the wheel. Penalties include heavy fines, licence suspension and possible detention. Had a drink? Take a taxi or ride-hailing app — it’s never worth the risk.
Fines & RentalFines & Salik on Your Rental
Any fines or Salik crossings during your hire are billed to you — drive within the rules and you’ll pay nothing beyond your crossings at cost. Serious offences add black points to the record. We keep it transparent, with proof of any charge on request.
